Average email deliverability rate: the widely cited numbers, and why they mean less than they seem
You came here for a number, so let's deal with the number first. The figures most often quoted as the industry's average deliverability rate, generally somewhere in the low-to-mid 80s percent, trace back overwhelmingly to one kind of source: seed tests published by testing outfits, most prominently EmailToolTester, whose recurring studies of major sending platforms have reported average inbox placement in roughly the 81–85% range across providers and test rounds. That attribution is the whole point of this paragraph. Those are EmailToolTester's measurements, of specific platforms, on specific seed lists, at specific times, and they are routinely re-quoted with every one of those qualifiers filed off until they sound like a law of nature.

First, which rate are we even talking about?
"Deliverability rate" gets used for two different measurements, and the gap between them is where most confusion starts.
Delivery rate is what your sending platform reports: the share of sent messages a receiving server accepted. Bounces are its only subtraction. A message accepted and filed straight into the junk folder counts as delivered, which is why delivery rates in the high 90s coexist with half a list never seeing a message. Platform dashboards report this number because it is the only one they can see.
Inbox placement rate is what the quoted averages actually measure: of the mail that was accepted, the share that landed in the inbox rather than the spam folder. Measuring it requires mailboxes you can look inside, which is why it comes from seed testing, and why it is the number this site's methodology is built around. Why the average moves with the method
Take one platform, one campaign, one day, and different measurement choices will return different placement rates. The big levers:
The seed list. Which providers, how many mailboxes, how aged, how configured. Fresh seed mailboxes with no history filter differently from lived-in ones, and a study's provider mix (how much Gmail versus Outlook versus regional providers) sets its average almost by itself, because per-provider filtering differs sharply.
Tab accounting. Gmail's Promotions tab is inbox, not spam; counting it as a miss can swing a measured rate substantially, and published studies have varied in how they treat it.

None of this makes seed studies worthless. What "good" looks like, without inventing a benchmark
Given all that, is there a defensible answer to "what's a good deliverability rate?" A few anchors are solid because they come from named sources or arithmetic rather than folklore:
- Delivery rate (the acceptance number) should sit very high, since its subtractions are bounces; a bounce rate above the low single digits is its own alarm, per the platform thresholds covered in that guide.
- Placement has no published pass mark from any mailbox provider; providers publish input thresholds instead, authentication and the 0.3% spam-complaint ceiling on our Gmail requirements page, and meeting those is the definable part of "good."
- Third-party averages, EmailToolTester's included, function best as a rough gravity reading: measured senders commonly lose a nontrivial share of accepted mail to spam folders, which is reason to measure yours, and that is about as far as an average will carry you.

An average, even a rigorous one, is an answer to a market-research question. The operational question is where your mail lands at your audience's providers, and that decomposes into checkable parts.
